"The word 'police' comes from the Greek word, ‘polis’ meaning a defensive wall around a city state like Thebes or Athens. The wall itself has a military function but the polis also defines a cultural boundary. Everything within it is defined by it, from the nature of the state to the identity of its citizens. It’s the closed bubble of a cultural grooming system for the transmission of cognitive and moral principles to subsequent generations, not all of which prove to be positive. Everything outside the polis (apolis activity) is unregulated, ‘uncivilised’, and volatile – the opposite of the status quo within. This is what has excited me during the making of Cop Socker – an overstepping of the polis that allows social and political alternatives to surface in relative safety."
