COPSOCKER from Shaun Doyle
"I wanted to do some work using dirt – there’s a lot of dirt in the city. It’s a material without substance though, you can’t pick it up or model it or whatever. It was an accident that I had to take my shoes off one time and was walking around in just my socks and they got filthy and I realised that I’d found a way of collecting and saving dirt – even better that I’d collected it with the sole of my foot which is a taboo body part in many cultures. I didn’t know what to do with the sock though. At first, I put a couple of rocks in it and made a socker like the lads in prison use when there’s a fight. Weaponizing the sock though didn’t help because the dirt was no longer the argument so I took the rocks out and rolled the sock up and stuffed it in my pocket and walked a while and as I walked I was thinking, sock, suck, socker, sucker, cock sucker, cop socker - that’s it! so I walked to my local police station and put the sock on a police car windscreen wiper, took a photo on my phone and walked away, leaving the sock there. There are 28 works in the series now."
